Fatty, Fatty, Two-by-Four...

How do I train for a marathon, triathlons, run a fast half-marathon and STILL gain weight? No, I haven't been eating Oreos (or any cookies for that matter). I had my first bowl of ice cream in about two months last night (not very satisfying - don't know if I will go back to that well.) I don't think I am eating particularly calorie-dense foods. I don't drink, don't drink soda. I eat breakfast and snack moderately. I just get so hungry especially mid-afternoon. If anyone has any advice, please let me know. As I have said before, I am not looking forward to dragging this extra weight around numerous race courses this summer. Maybe I just need to take Peyton Manning's advice. (I guess that guy was right, I am a little bigger than expected. Son of a bitch!)

I am in your boat too. I read all these articles on what to eat, superfoods, and I eat all of them Blueberries, lots of veggies, MUSF, nuts, dark chocolate sometimes, I have a few sips of vino every couple of weeks.

I work my ass off every workout, and I am bigger now than last year this time. Go figure.

Global warming! I am going to start to blame EVERYTHING on global warming. Or the international financial crisis. Maybe I will just combine the two. Everything is caused by the Global International Financial Warming Crisis.

I have the same problem...so if you figure out a solution can you let me know what it is? I'm trying to get to a better racing weight for this summer's triathlon season!

Global warming! Oh wait, you already covered that. Are you eating ENOUGH calories for the amount you are outputting? I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but if you don't eat enough your body will actually hold onto what it's got and it's harder to lose weight.

I like to go with the ole "muscle weighs more than fat" one myself. :)

Yeah Court! Have you thought of that Todd? You are lifting more and doing core work.

I like to blame a full moon, damn thing always makes me bloated and makes my kids act up.

Mary - If only that were the case. I haven't lifted in weeks and I occasionally do core work. I guess I could blame me period - apparently everyone thinks I have a vagina.

I'm with Charisa. I eat non stop and can't stop the weight loss. When I look at what some people eat and still train I don't know how they do it. Hope you solve it soon

I actually kind of hate Charisa and Maggs. Well, definitely Maggs because I have watched her consume copious amounts of food (and she steals my cookies and eats them behind my back!) and continue to look exceptionally hot. Charisa I haven't witnessed, but I suspect that it's the same.
I refer to these girls as skinny bitches and direct them to the sandwich isle.

Glad to know I'm not the only fat kid out there trying to do this stuff.

It's like Charisa said...are you eating enough, but also enough of the right types of food? Add in lots of fiber, take out as much processed foods as possible. Do you drink very many calories - i.e. juice, gatorade, soda (yes, even diet), etc. Are you adding a lot of condiments to your foods? What sort of carb/protein/fat ratio are you getting?

I would suggest keeping a food journal for a week of EVERY SINGLE BITE that goes into your mouth - type of food, how much, condiments, preparation (grilled, fried, steamed, etc.)

I would suggest adding the weight lifting back in. It really does help in the weight loss department. Yes, muscle weighs more than fat, but in the end, if you feel more lean...then you've won.

Another thing...how much are you using supplements (GU, electrolytes, etc.) Many athletes overestimate how much of these they need and underestimate how many calories these items can add. All that while underestimating how much they are actually burning during exertion.

On last factor...training for endurance sports and weight loss don't really go hand in hand. Once training hits a certain level (everyone is different on this) then weight loss can actually reverse and you see a weight gain as you body kicks into survival mode. There are a lot of articles on this...I'll see if I can track a couple down for you.

Sorry...not trying to do a blog post within your blog. Email me if I don't make any sense to you. :-P

I just started calorie counting on my iPhone using an application called Lose It. I'm not being super anal about it, using it more as a tool to realize exactly how many calories are in various foods and how to pick foods that are lower in calories (sneak culprit for me? THE MANGO.). Anyway, that's helped. It's hard to balance dieting/training, I think. Good luck!
